The Hub for Canadian Women in STEM

My name is Karen Reid.

I am a teacher.

When I was 10 I wanted to be an elementary school music teacher.

I work as a Senior Lecturer in Computer Science at the University of Toronto.

I am proud of having a student tell me how something they learned in my class helped them in a significant way. I’ve worked on curriculum initiatives and classroom software tools, but it is the daily process of working with students that makes this such a great job.

The biggest obstacle I have faced was the impostor syndrome. Having the confidence to believe that I was good at what I do didn’t come easily to me. Fortunately, I’ve had a lot of supportive people around me.

My advice to women is just go for it! There are so many cool things happening in Computer Science that you probably haven’t even imagined. Also, take advantage of the people around you and ask questions. At university this means talking to your profs and fellow students
