The Hub for Canadian Women in STEM

My name is Hayley Todesco

I am an Undergraduate, Microbiology.

When I was 10 I wanted to be a writer.

I work as a Scientist.

I am proud of my work on cleaning oil sands waste having such amazing scientific results. I am also extremely proud of winning the Stockholm Junior Water Prize and being a global finalist in the Google Science Fair. These last few months have been amazing.

The biggest obstacle I have faced was scheduling and perseverance – balancing hundreds of lab hours working on my science fair project with my high school classes and homework.

My advice to women is There are so many research opportunities available for young people if you are simply brave enough to ask. I started working in university labs at age thirteen because I went through faculty pages emailing professors until one said yes. Put yourself out there because eventually someone will say yes!
