Portraits of Strength features women in STEM who have helped break barriers and achieved great things within their industry. These are the movers and shakers making a better world for future female leaders in STEM. Here are the stories of how they’re changing the ratio, serving as role models for girls and young women across Canada, and inspiring us all.
I am a Science Broadcaster and TV producer.
When I was 10 I wanted to be able to breathe underwater.
I work as a Host on Daily Planet, Discovery Channel.
I am proud of being in a position that allows me to educate, share ideas and inspire wonder on a daily basis.
The biggest obstacle I have faced was that some considered my goal an ‘impossible dream’. It takes courage and persistence to keep working toward something, when others “helpfully” remind you that the odds are stacked against you.
My advice to women is to always aim higher than the status quo. You will meet little resistance if you chase an expected career, but if you’re a woman who wants a wild and adventurous life, remember: you don’t need big balls — just some serious ovaries.
