Sam Maggs

Portraits of Strength features women in STEM who have helped break barriers and achieved great things within their industry. These are the movers and shakers making a better world for future female leaders in STEM. Here are the stories of how they’re changing the ratio, serving as role models for girls and young women across Canada, and inspiring us all.

My name is Sam Maggs

I am a mediaite

When I was 10 I wanted to be a ballerina/astronaut/TV writer

I am proud of getting hired for Geekosystem! Lots of my tech- and science-related articles have been picked up by Digg, Mashable, and other sites – and they never question my “cred” because I’m female.

I work as an Editor at Geekosystem.

The biggest obstacle I’ve had to overcome is Dealing with men who assume I do what I do for attention. I’m passionate about tech and geekery, and I don’t apologize for it. You just have to ignore the negativity.

My advice to women is stop saying you want to write and start writing. Find online publications to work for gratis; get your voice out there. Build a portfolio; be passionate. People will notice your hard work!
